The Life and Art of
HERMAN WALD
(1906-1970)
Birth of an Idea
1968
Clay. 29 x 48 x 27 cm
Or Inception of Thought.
This abstract image is dominated by a double arch which in Herman Wald’s iconography symbolizes the Tablets of the Law. The centre point hovers over a circular receptacle within a bulbous form which flows into a foetal shape. Inception means beginning, conception. This figure is iconologically related to the “Mandorla” (1948) by “Jacques Lipchitz” in his Notre Dame de Liesse which too is based on the idea of conception, but in his case it is a Christian motif.
