Cain

This figure was a direct  reaction to the Holocaust.  Herman Wald wrote: “Let these lit-up eyes be an eternal warning to mankind,  that they should never relapse into this animalism that has shocked mankind beyond all forgetting.”  The gravitational downward thrusting pose expresses Cain’s  feeling of remorse for killing his brother, Abel, his  guilt and even despair that his act is irrevocable.  Cain’s pitiful stance conveys  a sense of hope  that he will never again commit fratricide.
