The Life and Art of
HERMAN WALD
(1906-1970)
Conquest
1969
Clay. 29 x 49 x 12 cm; 28 x 4 x 11 cm; 26 x 42 x 10 cm
This is the third of the trio of abstract sculptures, the other two being La Femme, representing sex (Fig. 54) and Hunger (Fig. 53) which Herman Wald regarded as the basic driving forces of the human race. Herman Wald’s abhorrence of war and of a nuclear catastrophe are intrinsic to his oeuvre. But at the end of his life he acknowledged that in the human psyche the urge to conquer is inevitable.
