The Life and Art of
HERMAN WALD
(1906-1970)
Embrace 3
1969
Bronze. 69 x 21 x 21 cm
This sculpture was conceived in a state of supreme happiness during Wald’s honeymoon with Vera in 1942 in Gonubie, Eastern Cape. He fashioned a small-scale clay model which he later re-modelled to its full size. Years later the couple revisited Gonubie and decided to have it cast in bronze and donate it to the town of their joyful memories. It shows the marital bond in the form of intertwined rhythms as a state of complete union between the man and the woman, and convinces us that their union is eternal and can never be severed. The figure also resembles an urn.
