The Life and Art of
HERMAN WALD
(1906-1970)
Eskapa baby girl portrait
1964
Plaster. 26 x 25 x 20 cm
This emotional child portrait was conceived as a result of a terrible tragedy. The two year old baby had choked to death, swallowing loquat pip. Her mother, Shirley Eskapa, commissioned Herman Wald to create this portrait head, based on photographs. It was cast in bronze for her gravestone. Herman Wald represented the baby in advance of her years. Her parted lips tell of childhood innocence, whilst her knowing eyes with the expressive pupils express the tragedy of her fate.
