Herman Wald had a complex relationship with the supreme Jewish prophet and  formidable  leader who delivered the Israelites from slavery to freedom. Moses  commanded: “Thou shalt not make unto thee a  graven image." To this  Herman Wald ruefully remarks: “with the same breath he took a chisel and carved it into stone,”  presenting  him as a carver, albeit o  words.
