The Life and Art of
HERMAN WALD
(1906-1970)
Hunger
1968
Ceramic. 26 x 44 x 22 cm
This is one of a trio of abstract works together with “Love”, (Fig. 54) and “Conquest” (Fig. 55), which were for Herman Wald the three driving forces of the human race. “Essen muszman, lieben braucht man” (eat one must, love one needs) he jokingly remarked in Yiddish. This ceramic piece implies physical and spiritual hunger. The whirling centre, like the curl of a wave, is reminiscent of the organic abstractions by Henry Moore, and characteristic of Herman Wald’s last period.
