The Life and Art of
HERMAN WALD
(1906-1970)
Jacob’s Ladder
1949
Bronze. 45 x 65 x 17 cm
Also entitled: Jacob’s Dream.
Herman Wald wrestled for 15 years with the concept of this sculpture. It depicts Jacob, with whom he strongly identified, asleep with his head on the stone and the ladder of ascending and descending angels. Here the angels themselves constitute the ladder and form a unit with Jacob. Herman Wald recognizes in Jacob the visionary, his dream reaching out into the stratosphere, towards which man incessantly strives.
