Jacob wrestling with the Angel

​This figure represents a stylistic breakthrough into abstraction and pre-empts  Herman Wald’s last period. It depicts a crucial scene in the Bible, in which Man wrestles with God. [Genesis 32:25-29]. After this struggle Jacob’s name became Israel. Herman Wald’s angel plunges down from heaven like a flame. Their head meet in a  fusion of the human and the divine.
