The Life and Art of
HERMAN WALD
(1906-1970)
Job 1
1950
Clay. 54 x 32 x 26 cm
The Biblical Job had been tested to the extreme. The theme once again reveals Herman Wald’s reaction to the Holocaust whose sheer enormity was impossible to grasp and the Jewish faith sorely tested with the question: how could God have allowed this to happen to his chosen people? Job’s head is twisted, his face turned upwards in direct interaction with God. The gesture of his upstretched arms and downturned hands outlines the shape of the tablets of the Ten Commandments.
