The Life and Art of
HERMAN WALD
(1906-1970)

La Femme
1969
Clay. 76 x 23 x 17 cm
This work represents one of a trio of abstract sculptures representing Sex, Hunger (Fig. 53) and Conquest (Fig. 55). According to Herman Wald these are the three driving forces of mankind. The elongated female figure, abstracted to its most minimal form, represents in an inverted view the shape of a phallus, male and female having fused into one entity.
