This sharply facetted sculpture, structured in cubic planes, is related to the urn (Fig. 45). It too has an implication of life and death in the relentless rhythm of a military march. The male and female torsi with their arms and legs cut off, march side by side like a duplicated armour. They are sexually indistinguishable, having taken on each other’s bodily features. Again the point of contact between the sculpture and its base is minimal, expressing the unearthly, spiritual aspirations of the couple. The expression of power and force is related to the British Vorticist movement, especially the primitivism of Henri Gaudier-Brzeska.
