The Life and Art of
HERMAN WALD
(1906-1970)
Peasant Girl
1944
Marble. 49 x 22 x 24 cm
Also entitled: Russian Girl.
This finely polished marble head of a Russian peasant represents a childhood memory of Eastern Europe. By omitting the pupils of her eyes she becomes a type rather than an individual. Her strong features which emerge from curvilinear and arabesque flourishes exude and a quiet spirituality, enhanced by the direct carving technique in the tradition of Michelangelo in which Herman Wald utilized the grain the material to enliven her features.
