The Life and Art of
HERMAN WALD
(1906-1970)
Rat Race
1965
Clay. 29 x 31 x 31 cm
Three men hurry past each other with drawn faces. Presented with a wry sense of humour and united by their rush, they are connected to each other up to the waist while their torsos tear into different directions. This is one of Wald’s most dynamic creations, filled with tension, as the three men all pull in different directions, hinting at the divisive competitiveness of the corporate and business world of Johannesburg which must have come as an unpleasant shock to Wald’s humanistic vision of mankind.
