The Life and Art of
HERMAN WALD
(1906-1970)
The Embrace 1.
1965
Bronze. 24 x 61 x 26 cm
This sculpture belongs to the mystical union-motif of Herman Wald’s final period. The embrace of the reclining couple forms a circular movement, their heads cradled in the encircling arms of the male figure. The languorous downward thrust unites the figures with nature and the earth and their smooth, sleek forms and flowing curves pressing downward have an organic quality. The rhythm and flow of the composition has a strong, tactile appeal.
