The Lovers I.

​This is an enlarged, independent version of a trophy which Herman Wald had created for the annual FOYSA  (For Outstanding Young South Africans)  award.  The original trophy features a marble base from which the figures reach upwards in their endeavour towards greater achievement. Here he  distilled the  slender figures into an intertwining,  floating flame. Their feet have little contact with the base and this gives the sculpture a weightless quality and a powerful vertical thrust upwards.
