The Life and Art of
HERMAN WALD
(1906-1970)
The Martyrs
1950
Wood. 120 x 35 x 6 cm
This panel belongs to the group of sculptures created in reaction to the Holocaust. Herman Wald took a trunk of shamfuti wood and submitted himself to its granular lines, carving out three tortured human figures. Their arms are upstretched in the form of burning flames and their feet and legs are consumed by fire. With this panel the artist has fused Jewish martyrdom throughout the ages with the horrors of the recent past.
