The Life and Art of
HERMAN WALD
(1906-1970)
Torsos
1968
Wood. 67 x 32 x 20 cm
With this double figure Herman Wald once more returned to carving with which he always regained stability. The release of the image from the narrow tree trunk is the result of the artist’s personal interaction with the wood. The two intertwined figures support each other. The void created by their legs is filled with energy. With his high degree of finish Herman Wald utilized the glow of the red grain. In its powerful rhythmicality it captures the spirit of Africa.
